Hello eveyone! In today’s show, I recite a story I wrote one cold wintery weekend at the ranch earlier this year. It’s a story I titled “Yes, Being Gay Ruined My Life”. I posted this story in written form shortly after I wrote it. I had it up for a few days and then pulled it down. I had gotten some strange responses to the story. I think some folks just didn’t get the point of the story. It is a story however that I just can’t let go. I thought it is important enough to me that I decided to recite it and post it as a podcast. I hope you enjoy the story and are able to reflect upon the real meaning of the story. Enjoy!

We are well into the month of June. The rains have stopped, oh I’m not sure if they ever came this year, you know with that global warming thing and all. The days are getting longer and warmer. Summer is upon us. June always seems to be a month that is so busy for us in one way or another. Deadlines at work are keeping me busy. Oops, I forgot to put the word “Silly” in front of “Deadlines”. Alex is going out of town to see a play (I don’t know why, NPH will not be there) and then head east for business. I need to get to the ranch to ride the RZR. You know you just have to get back on that damn horse after it kicks you in the butt. And yes, this is Gay Pride month after all.

Every year I think about trying to post as much information as I can on Gay Pride month on our website. And, I rarely do. This is the San Francisco Bay Area for goodness sake, there has to be tons of events and celebrations going on around here. I’ve lived here all but the first nine years of my life, I must know about all that goes on here, right? Well I know the San Jose Pride festival is coming up soon and towards the end of the month is the San Francisco Pride Parade. Maybe I just feel a little ambivalent about the whole thing. I know there is much to celebrate and reflect upon. It just seems like this is how I feel each year that this month comes along.

I don’t know, do we really need a special month for us to celebrate? It always seems that this is the time of year when I dread watching the media report on Gay Pride events. In your face drag queens dancing down the street, men in bikini underwear flopping eye opening, jaw dropping male members in front of the camera lenses, boys, no I mean girls, no boys, wearing black leather boots that come above the knees with six inch heals strutting around, Bank of America and Budweiser ads everywhere, this is what it must seem to be all about to those “outsiders”. What the hell do Bank of America and Budweiser have to do with Gay Pride anyway? Oh yes, that’s right, it is really just all about the money mister! Wouldn’t it be just something to live in a world and time where we didn’t have to pull the frocks out of the closet, well some of us have them put away for special occasions only, and prance around to be noticed and scream for equal rights? It’s just that the high pitch gives me such a headache.

Well, I do think that we need a special month each year to celebrate pride; pride in our community and our pride in ourselves. There just seems to be an over abundance of religious tyranny throughout the world and even right here in our own back yard these days. This tyranny seems to just preach lots of hate of all kinds and does nothing but fill us with despair and shame. But one must understand that the basis of religion is all this and much worse. I suppose I might feel better about celebrating pride in who I am if I could do just that, celebrate “who” I am. The outsiders just want us to go away and the community always seems to have this perception of who we should be. Did I say “should be”? The elite and outspoken of the gay community seem to have this attitude that we “must” be a certain way. I want to celebrate but do I really have to do it their way? You know, I think I’m the outsider. I’m not sure that I fit in anywhere, but I digress.

I thought I would search the Internet, I mean “google it” and find out what I could on Gay events this month. I really don’t know what I would do without Google. Just how did human kind live for thousands and thousands of years without it?

Well I did find the White House proclamation signed by President Obama declaring June as Gay Pride Month. http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Presidential-Proclamation-LGBT-Pride-Month/ I’m not sure if this is the first time that a President has made such a declaration or not. It all gets a little confusing trying to decipher the plethora of information out there. It also gets very tiring hearing both sides vacillate between their own proclamations of what is right and wrong. It is especially tiring to hear those in the Gay community one minute lambast the White House for not recognizing Gays and then when the White House does such as through the Gay Pride Month proclamation, those same people disagree with that too! http://www.queerty.com/shock-obama-proclaims-june-gay-pride-month-20090601/

Next, I found a piece by Alan Chambers, President of Exodus International, where he states Obama’s proclamation presents a problem for Christians since the self-indulgent, empty pursuit of Gay life is not something that anyone should be celebrating. http://www.opposingviews.com/articles/opinion-gay-pride-month-just-what-are-we-celebrating-r-1244576831 What I get from the article is that fat, pimple faced kids in school should have special protection rights but not Gay boys that are getting the shit beaten out of them every day. The solution for the bloody nosed Gay boy is to denounce the homosexuality and grab onto the power of Jesus Christ and all will be well! A Men Sister!

Then there is this absolutely disgusting and pathetic article by Jack Kenny from New American. http://www.thenewamerican.com/culture/family/1219 The rhetoric is almost laughable, but I think I might just vote for a Misogynist Pride Month out of all his suggestions. Ok, ok, that was just a joke. As a Gay man, I just love all women. I can’t figure out why they just don’t like me? The ignorance, hatred and outright lies that these people put forth are I would say a sin! I doubt that many Gays really know of the hatred that these perverted organizations put forth each and every day. I suggest you read the article.

In any event, it is Gay Pride Month. How I celebrate is up to me. How you celebrate is up to you. If I decide to stand on the corner of Powell and Market Streets to watch the parade, fine. If I decide to do nothing and just feel proud of whom I am, that is fine too. We all have the right to celebrate in whatever fashion works for us. And, yes we do have the right and the reason to celebrate our Gay pride this month. Are you going to celebrate? This week Alex and Dean talk about hitting the outdoors with their new toy, the Polaris RZR. Alex decks himself out in his motocross outfit and gets behind the wheel. Australian Daniel is back in the U.S. and also joins Dean at the Ranch for some RZR riding fun. Dean has a little accident, well ok, he runs himself over with the RZR.

The California Supreme Court upholds Proposition 8 and Gay marriage in California goes down to defeat. The courts and the citizens of this great state have spoken and they have given us legal status as second class citizens. Dean rants on about never again donating money to HRC or Equality California.  Gays decide not to take the blood money from Doug Manchester, owner of three San Diego hotels including the Manchester Grand Hyatt. Oh, then there is the freedom of speech which was denied to “Miss California”.

In entertainment news, Alex and Dean discuss the finale of American Idol and how America denied a gay man the title. NPH, you all know who that is, is in the news and RENT is coming to town.

Alex dressed up in his new moto-cross duds and we hit the back country today. It is early summer so the temperature only got to 100 degrees (f). We did an early afternoon run and had lunch once we got to the edge of the property…about 1.5 hours out.

Alex even got behind the wheel and drove the RZR a few times…slowly of course! He said he doesn’t like it when I drive fast. Tighten that seat belt Alex!

I bought a Moose top for the RZR and we installed it first thing Saturday morning. It sure makes a difference in keeping the sun off our heads. Now I want to install a half windshield. Oh does this mean I’m going to go crazy on the accessories now? No, Alex, not those kind of accessories!

Hi, this is Alex and Dean - Gay Men Talking, coming to you from San Francisco!

This week Alex and Dean reminisce about Australia and the fun times and cute men down under and their first week back home which had its moments:  Dean flying to Baltimore less than 19 hours after arriving home from Sydney and Alex getting locked out of the house at 5:30 in the morning.

After shopping for Australian wine and beer, Alex and Dean have a night out with Jeff and Robert and Chelsea Handler and drinks at the Four Seasons.  Dean rants about the sound system while Alex sucks it forward.

The countdown is on for Australia. On Saturday night we will be on a plane headed for Sydney. We are getting a little nervous…there is so much to do. Clothes, documents, electronics, have I forgotten anything? Work. yes, we have to get through the next few days of work. That’s going to be the tough part. Let’s double check all the reservations. It’s a 15 hour flight from San Francisco to Sydney. What am I going to do on an airplane for 15 hours? I hope I can sleep!

We are really looking forward to getting to Sydney, seeing Daniel and having a tall Australian beer on Monday. Australian James is going to visit with us too in Sydney. We are really looking forward to meeting him. We are also going to have a drink with some of our Sydney and Melbourne listeners while in each city. Let us know if you would like to join in on the fun.

We are bring our portable recording equipment and plan on doing some podcasts from Australia. I will also try to post to the web site here as we progress through our journey.

Alex and Dean are playing cowboys this weekend and record a show from the ranch in Northern California. Well, they don’t really play cowboys since neither of them have cowboy boots.

Alex and Dean give a run  down of what they have been up to over the last three months. Alex has been traveling; D.C. for a professional conference, Las Vegas to see Cher and Los Angeles to see, yes you guessed it, RENT! Dean has been visiting the ranch and riding his quad. He wants a new more powerful toy, will he go out and buy it?

Alex and Dean are off to Australia for the month of April. Australian Daniel has been helping them plan their trip and he will travel a bit with them over the three week adventure.

My RENT obsession runs deep.  You think I would have been satisfied seeing it a total of 8 times (Los Angeles, Seattle, Cupertino, San Jose, San Francisco,  and New York).  But when a local high school put on a production of RENT I had to go see it two times.  And when they were showing the final Broadway production for four days in movie theaters, I went to see it THREE times.   I was disappointed when I found out that  “RENT: The Broadway Tour” would not be coming to the San Francisco Bay Area especially since Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal would be performing along with Justin Johnston (Angel) and Michael McElroy (Tom Collins) who were both in the closing cast.  But it was scheduled to play at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles.  Of course I had to see it.  So I purchased my ticket and headed down to LA.  I would have to rate this performance as the second or third best performance of RENT that I have seen and on par with my experience of seeing it in New York.

My evening began with taking the Metro in Los Angeles from North Hollywood to Hollywood.  Who knew LA had a subway system?  It was such a great experience since the Metro leaves you right across the street from the theater.  As I emerged from the Hollywood and Vine station I was greeted with the RENT marquee right in front of me.  I arrived a bit early because I had told myself I was going to become a RENT groupie and get Anthony Rapp’s and Adam Pascal’s autograph.  So I began my walk alongside the theater in search of the performer’s entrance so I would know where to hang out when the show ended.   I saw a few people with posters and programs and books hanging out so I decided to stand around to see what they were waiting for.  A few performers arrived and a few of those waiting were able to get their autographs.  I overheard two women talking about looking for the blue Toyota Prius.  No more than 5 minutes later, a blue Toyota Prius pulls into the lot next door.  A minute later, Anthony Rapp emerged from the driver’s seat and as he walked into the theater assured everyone he would sign autographs after the show.   So,  headed inside the theater and purchased a program and a pin. I found my seat in the 8th row and waited impatiently for the show to begin.  I was blown away.  It was a great performance.  During intermission I sent Dean a text saying that I had a grin from ear-to-ear since the show began.

After the show ended I exited the theater using one of the side exits and was pleasantly surprised to find out the exit left me right at the area where fans wait for autographs.  I situated myself near the beginning of the line and got my program, sharpee, and camera ready.  The first to come out was Adam Pascal.  He took the long walk to the awaiting fans (RENTheads) and graciously signed autographs for the line of fans that wrapped around the side of the theater.  I had him sign my program and snapped several pictures of him.  A few minutes later Anthony Rapp emerged and I was so excited.  Anthony is openly gay and I have much respect for him.   I got his autograph and several great pictures.  I even gave him a GMT business card.  I doubt he’ll listen but who knows.  Maybe he’ll become a fan.

I hung out a little bit more to see if I could get Justin’s autograph but it was getting late and I had to get back onto the Metro to head home.  I walked back to the Metro station with a wide grin on my face knowing that I was now a true RENT groupie wondering how long it would be before I get to see it again!

This morning Alex and I headed out to return a shirt at Calvin Klein and as we left the room, Alex’s mother and Aunt came out of their room. They were looking pretty good. We asked if they stayed in all evening. Hell no! They didn’t get back to their room until 3:30am. Alex and I were in our room and fast asleep by 1:30am. I think I will just leave this one alone.

We did have lunch and dinner with Alex’s mother and Aunt and that was all we saw of them all day. It was a day of shoe shopping and casino bar exploring for Alex and myself. God that gets one tired quickly. I think a day and a half is just the right amount of time for Vegas. When you don’t gamble, this is about all you can take. I have a blister on my foot and frostbite on my finger tips. I couldn’t wear my gloves and work the Blackberry at the same time, duh!

We have ironed our club clothes for the evening and are about to head out to Krave. I tell you it better be open this evening and it better have dozens of cute boys standing around. I deserve the eye candy, don’t I? At my age this just might be the last time I’m allowed in such a gay club. I will have to lie about my age when gayland security questions me at the door. But then I just do as I always do in Vegas…I just say that I am a good friend of Dan Tanna’s and in the door we go.

Sitting at the piano bar last night we were listening to Whitney Phoenix playing the piano. I bought his CD. I enjoy listening to real people play and I’m happy to support someone not manipulated by the music industry mafia. Oh, I better be careful using that word here in Vegas. Damn it, were is Dan Tanna?

Ok, time for a beer and cute boys at Krave.

Alex and I flew out of San Jose at noon today and made a stop over in Burbank to pick up the ladies. It was a bit bumpy into Burbank and then on the way to Vegas. First thing we did when getting to the casino was to sit down and have drink! The rooms at Caesars are fabulous. Please forgive me for using that word…I’m just trying to be less homo-masculine. I really just want to fit into the gay mold and be like everyone else!

We had dinner tonight at The Cheese Cake Factory. Oh yes, while the ladies were out gambling, Alex and I where shopping. We both found new outfits at  Calvin Klein. I think we both look very sharp and ready for some clubbing here in Vegas. Alex might have to buy another new bag to get the new clothes home.

Australian Daniel was back in the U.S. for a trip to D.C. for President Obama’s inauguration. Daniel made this trip in order to help a close friend back home visit D.C. during the inauguration. As it always is, it was great to see Daniel. We had dinner at the Sausage Factory in the Castro and visited a couple of bars in the hood. Daniel is an amazing young man. It is a privilege to know him and be  his friend.

Speaking of Australia, Alex and I have decided to visit Australia this year. We are now in the process of renewing our passports and doing some preliminary planning for a trip sometime around April. What really makes this exciting for us is that we will now visit Daniel’s homeland. Daniel has graciously offered to help us plan our trip and to also accompany us for a time during our trip. We have a lot to see while in Australia and we will have to plan our time very wisely. We are also excited to meet Australian James while in Sydney. More to come later on our trip plans.

Alex and I would like to send our prayers to the people in Australia that have been affected by the terrible fires that have broken out there this last week. We hope all our listeners and friends there are safe.

Alex is napping and I need to wake him up. He wanted to head out tonight to one of the gay bars here Vegas. I have posted some pics to our flickr site of our trip today, so take a look. I’ll try to continue to post pics over the next couple of days.

Hi Everyone! Merry Christmas.

I spent Christmas at the Ranch…I’m still here actually. It snowed on Tuesday and there was snow on the ground on Wednesday when I got here and got the motorhome out of the storage lot and put it on an RV space…on the hill I might add. The day time temperatures are around 46 degrees and nighttime gets down to about 32. My Christmas dinner in the motorhome consisted of sausage, corn and a salid. Oh yah, and lots of wine!

Alex had a great time visiting his family in Los Angeles and he is now safe and sound back home. Hopefully, I will have internet access long enough to make this posting! Most of the snow has now melted. Today, I put on two layers of thermos and my off-road motorcycle gear and rode my quad out back in the hills behind the ranch property. Actuall, I am still on the ranch property…there is 13,000 acres of it!

I had a great time. There was snow, mud and water on the trails. I didn’t go out too far since I was by myself. It would be just awesome if I had some gay “butch” friends to ride here with me. I took a side trail up to the top of this hill and stopped to take some photos. Here is one I took of the quad. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Let’s Dance!

The San Jose Mercury News states that we are angry at the passage of Proposition 8 and as a result we are harassing the supporters of the proposition. Damn right we are angry. The one thing that the newspaper fails miserably at though is the accurate reporting of the harassment that the fanatical religious right commits against the gay community each and every day. These people have harassed us all of our lives and continue to do so under the shield of religion and the paper says nothing about this. It seems that all that is said and done in the name of religion in this country is acceptable, but equal civil rights for all people, for Gay people, of this country is not.

To the editors of the San Jose Mercury News, anger is justified; it is good, healthy and appropriate. Directing this anger to non-violent protests and boycotts are justified and are necessary to ensure full equal rights to all. The newspaper seems to believe that protests and boycotts are a right of minorities of color but not a right of the gay community. Is it that we don’t have this right because you believe religion stands behind you and not behind us?

It is true that we are now at a crossroad that we have not faced before. The Mercury News is right that we need to figure out where to go from here. It seems that to the newspaper’s surprise, some of us have figured this out. I’m not sure that the newspaper yet understands that the one thing in this world that seems to be important is the “financial” bottom line. What really talks in this country is money. We are not going to make a difference in this country at the ballot box. We never have and we never will. We are going to make a difference only when we decide how and where to spend our money. It is my right to be able to decide where I spend my money. It is wrong and offensive for the Mercury News to tell me that it is ugly and wrong for me to make such a decision. The Mercury News states that I am intimidating and suppressing the First Amendment rights of others if I make a decision not to spend my money at a business that I disagree with. What fascist country do you believe that we live in Mr. Editor? You seem to have forgotten all about my First Amendment rights. You accuse me of “threatening” the livelihoods of others when I exercise my right to spend my money where I please.

What about my livelihood? I have lived with the threat to my livelihood my entire adult life. Do you really think that my job in this state is protected because I am gay? You are very naive people to think that I can’t be fired today because I am gay. Every day in this country and in this great state of California, my livelihood is threatened by the radical fanatics of the likes of people such as Sarah Palin and many other religious zealots that abound in our society even in the year 2008. But, oh my, what an un-American act for me to make a conscious decision as to where to spend my money based on whether or not a company supports the same rights for me as they do for you! And let’s not forget the abominable act that I am committing by thinking that I can exercise the First Amendment right to publicly state where I will and will not spend my money. I feel that you must believe that First Amendment rights were created strictly for religious discrimination and newspapers like yours.

In another Mercury News article, “Protests, boycotts erupt in the wake of Prop. 8’s passage“, the author Mary Anne Ostrom refers to the “ugly, anti-democratic witch hunt” gays are committing upon those that supported Proposition 8 as supposedly stated by those supporters. First we are denied the same rights as straights with the horrendous discriminatory legislation now written into the California state constitution and now when we try to exercise our First Amendment rights, we are called ugly and anti-democratic. One thing that Ostrom fails to cover in her article is the ugly, anti-democratic witch hunt that the supporters of Prop 8, the fanatical religious right, have perpetrated upon the GLBT community for decades in this country. We have been beaten up, killed, discriminated against, thrown out of our homes, lost our jobs, forced to live in the closet and to live in fear every day of our lives. Who is perpetrating the witch hunt here?

Now our rag-tag little group of Gays have “exploded” into an eruption of McCarthyism style tactics with our protests and boycotts? Wow! In Ostrom’s article, she also mentions the white powdery substances sent in the mail to certain supporters of Prop 8. One moron mailing this powder, if this is even true, does by no means signify that this was done by or sanctioned by the Gay community. What is the purpose of even mentioning this in the article? This sounds more like a McCarthyism type of hysteria tactic to me; one being played out by the newspaper.

Protesting and boycotting is not mob justice. These are two fundamental acts that this country was founded on. The GLBT community has every right to carry out peaceful protests especially when we are denied the same civil rights afforded to the straights. Ms. Ostrom should do her homework before she writes any more articles lambasting the GLBT community. Does she have any clue as to the might and persistence of the religious fanatics that devote their life efforts to boycotting businesses that support Gay causes? Ms. Olstom, you have heard of the Internet, right? Well use it and do some research. For starters, check out Focus on the Family and American Family Association. Ms. Olstom also reminds us that the measure passed 52 to 48 percent. Being that I’m not stupid, I do understand that by the laws of this state that, yes, this measure passed. But, please let’s not be pompous and believe that this is the will of the people. Two percentage points over fifty percent will not silence us and does not justify the continued persecution of our people.

I’m really tired of hearing about the “sanctity of traditional marriage” and the righteousness of religion. I’m really tired of having century’s old religion shoved down my throat. I’m tired of religion running this country. I have experienced firsthand the hypocrisy of those that claim to follow the teachings of their religion; they steal, coerce, lie and sin all week long, ask for forgiveness on Sunday and then proceed to do it all over again come Monday morning. These are the same people that believe God is on their side no matter what and that God has sent them on some absurd mission to rid the world of the Gay abomination.

I fear the passage of Prop 8 and articles such as the ones printed by the San Jose Mercury News and other newspapers will just help to justify the continued hate and crimes against the GLBT community. Maybe someday the Mercury News and other such papers will start writing about the hideous acts that religion and the supporters of Proposition 8 continue to perpetrate against the Gay community each and every day. Oh but I guess the newspaper should be careful that they don’t look like they are throwing too much support our way. We Gay people wouldn’t want you to upset your remaining paying customers and readers, the fanatical religious right.

We celebrate by seeing Elton John in Vegas!

Hi, this is Alex and Dean - Gay Men Talking, coming to you from San Francisco!

In a double episode this week Alex and Dean head to Sin City to celebrate their 14-year anniversary  and to see “Elton John – The Red Piano.”   Elton’s performance brought tears to Dean’s eyes.  Alex had tears in his eyes too, but that has to do more with paddling than Elton John.   Dean shed tears again when he found out that “Star Trek: The Experience” was no longer open.  Alex and Dean meet up with their friend Jeff and enjoy the gay bars in Las Vegas.  At Krave, Dean and Jeff lust over the Jello Shooter guy while at Charlie’s, Alex plays “Wheel of Torture” … you’ll just have listen to find out what that is all about.

In the second hour of the show this week, Alex and Dean attend the “Fight the Hate” rally against proposition 8 in San Francisco and were moved by the powerful speakers.  Listen to Reverend Dr. Penny Nixon, San Francisco County Supervisor Tom Ammiano, State Senator Carol Migden, and Reverend Amos Brown rally the troops and call for action.  It was a very emotional and motivational morning.   The rally was nationwide in over 80 cities such as Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis.

In entertainment news Alex and Dean discuss Daniel Craig and the new James Bond movie, Keith Olberman’s special comment on the passage of proposition 8, and Nathan Lane no longer appearing in ‘Til Death.

A New Day has come…for some of us

Hi, this is Alex and Dean - Gay Men Talking, coming to you from San Francisco!

This week Alex and Dean have their own discussion on Election 2008…who needs CNN?  On November 4, 2008, a change came to America.  Alex and Dean celebrate the victory of Barack Obama and commiserate the passage of Proposition 8 in California which legally discriminates against gays and lesbians.  Proposition 8 has become a divisive issue here in California and protests are being held across the state.

Alex and Dean also celebrate their upcoming 14-year anniversary with a trip to Las Vegas to see Elton John.   Dean is soooo excited, not just about seeing Elton, but because he got two free tickets to attend the Star Trek convention.   Alex isn’t as excited about that.   Alex and Dean buy new toys for their anniversary…new Blackberry Bolds!  Dean has being playing with his ever since he got it.

Alex and Dean also talk about what they’ve been up to the past  week:  Dean comes out at work, Alex sees Madonna, they see High School RENT (twice) and Alex spends a week in the city without Dean.  How scandalous!

I have lived my life as a second class citizen of the nation that I was born in. The religious fanatics across the country have been working very hard and spending lots of money to keep me segregated and ostracized from their esteemed ranks. Today was the day that I needed to vote. As I selected “No” for the California Proposition 8, the proposition to write discrimination into the California constitution, I prayed to God that we will defeat this horrible piece of hatred.

The state is split on this issue. What this means is that 1 out of every 2 people that I cross as I walk down the sidewalk or pass in the hallway at work, believe that I don’t deserve the same rights as they enjoy each and every day without even a thought of what these rights mean to them. This is a hard concept to live with each day. It is amazing how others around the world think we in America are so backwards for a country that is believed to be so advanced and such a leader in the world. I must say, I agree.

I guess what is so disturbing about this issue and all others for that matter, is we will win or lose this fight based on money. It all comes down to the amount of money that can be raised and spent to get each side’s message out. Make no mistake, religion understands money very well. Lets hope that the people of California see this proposition for what it is and do the right thing.

As I sit here on the eve of what is probably the most important political election in my lifetime, there is one thing for sure that I can count on; by this time tomorrow night there will be change in our country. Now the question is, will this change be for the better or worse. We will have a new government that will lead us into the future. Will it be a future that will be bright or one full of dismay. Will Alex and I as Gay men and partners be one step closer to being accepted as equals among our neighbors or will we be relegated to second class citizens forever?

Please vote tomorrow and if you live in California, please vote No on Proposition 8.

San Mateo High Drama Presents RENT

Last night, Alex and I attended the opening performance of RENT, the school edition, at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center in San Mateo, California. The musical was performed by the students of the San Mateo High School Drama department. I must say it was incredible to see these students perform.

Alex and I didn’t know what we were in for. As you know, Alex is a RENT fanatic. He knows every word of every song. I asked him not to sing along this time as we watched the performance! Before the musical began, I also looked over at Alex and reminded him this is being performed by high school students so don’t expect to see what we saw at the Nederlander Theater last year or at any of the other eight live performances he has seen. Mind you this wasn’t said because I thought these students weren’t up to it, I just thought I should set Alex’s expectations. That’s what partners should help each other out with, right?

From the moment the house lights went down, the band began playing and the stage lights came up to the finale, Alex and I were captivated by the energy on stage and in the audience. We enjoyed the performance from beginning to end. I couldn’t stop smiling through the entire performance. These students did such a, well ok, I’ll say it, a “fabulous” job that I haven’t had so much fun seeing a live performance since Alex and I saw Avenue Q over a year ago. Let me tell you, if you live in the area, go see it! Go watch these students sing, dance and perform!

Angel was what Angel should be, fabulous in all her glory, Maureen stole the show with her performance of Over the Moon and I thought Roger brought the show home with his singing voice. Every actor put 110% into their character and performance. Alex and I were curious as to what would be changed or cut out of the school edition and we wondered what the school would allow them to do. Alex says very little was different and very few words were changed. I have to applaud the administrators, faculty and students for allowing this musical to be performed as it should be.

I still get the feeling that performing RENT at a high school in the San Francisco Bay Area in the year 2008 is still somewhat groundbreaking. Its a shame that it has to be that way, but not a surprise after seeing just how split the state is on Proposition 8, the proposition to ban forever Gay marriage in the state of California. My hat goes off to these students and so much credit is due to these students that were brave enough to take on this musical with its story and message. Maureen and Joanne and Angel and Collins even braved it all and had their characters kiss as is done in the full musical. Wow, how exceptional for a high school production!

I read a review today by Keith Kreitman of The Daily Journal and I agree completely with his praise of this extraordinary performance. But once again Kreitman’s review shows just how homophobia does live even right here in the Bay Area. In giving a short synopsis of the story, Kreitman does mention the main characters and the love between two female and two male characters, but he seems to gloss over these relationships in stating what he believes is the core of the musical; the relationship between a straight couple dealing with drug addiction and AIDS. I think the musical is much more then that. I think equal time goes to the “lesbian” relationship between Maureen and Joanne and the “Gay” relationship between Angel and Collins. I guess it just still offends me somewhat that we can’t even use those two words, Gay and Lesbian, in a daily news publication here on the Peninsula in a review of a musical that goes way beyond just a straight couple dealing with HIV/AIDS.

Well, enough of my soap box. Lets get back to this great performance done by an amazing group of young adults that seem to have a lot more courage then most of us put together. I want to thank these students for a great evening of entertainment.

Hi, this is Alex and Dean - Gay Men Talking, coming to you from San Francisco!

Alex and Dean continue to enjoy the last of the remaining summer weekends.  With a drive to Lake Tahoe in the convertible, they enjoy good weather, good food, good drink, but face gay discrimination at Harrah’s.  After fun in Lake Tahoe Alex leaves Dean at home and heads to Las Vegas – which he can’t talk about since what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.  Alex and Dean round out the summer at a party in the Santa Cruz mountains.

While Alex was away in Las Vegas, Dean was home watching the Democratic National Convention and he was quite impressed with the speeches.  Kennedy, the Clintons, Biden, and Obama.  Dean is a believer.    The speeches were all inspirational and motivating.  Let’s see how the republicans do at their convention…although they aren’t off to a good start with their choice of Sarah Palin as the VP nominee.

The Olympics come to a close with a big ole gay gold medal thanks to Matthew Mitcham winning gold in the men’s 10 meter platform diving.  Of course, NBC didn’t mention the fact that Matthew is an out and proud gay man.  It was great watching Matthew come from behind to win the gold on his final dive.

In entertainment news Alex discusses the upcoming TV season , the Emmy Awards, and the return of Neil Patrick Harris.

We stood outside the Mayor’s office waiting for Del and Phyllis to emerge as a married couple. There was energy in the air. The crowd cheered when Del and Phyllis along with Mayor Newsom walked out of the Mayor’ office. It was an exciting and proud moment.

Del and Phyllis had been partners since meeting in 1950. Their activism for and journalism about the gay community changed countless lives over the years. They helped to pave the way for Alex and I to live together as we do today.

Del was born on May 5, 1921 and she passed away yesterday, August, 27, 2008 at the age of 87. Del will leave a void in our community and she will be missed.

Rest in peace, Del.

Summer Loving – Alex and Dean are enjoying their summer. As Dean heads to the ranch to ride the quad and work on the motor home, Alex is out and about shopping and drinking with the “girls.” What would summer be without the Summer Olympics and those cute boys? The gymnasts and swimmers are among the cutest. Dean can’t wait for BMX Racing to make it’s Olympic debut. And after seeing “A Chorus Line” and “Mamma Mia” (the movie) it has been one big gay summer. And it’s not over yet. Alex and Dean are taking their first road trip in the Mustang to Lake Tahoe.

Neil Patrick Harris is on Alex’s mind a lot these days with “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog” and the cover of OUT magazine. Who’s on Dean’s mind? Nicholas Hoult from “About a Boy” and “Wha-Wha.” In other entertainment news, Alex talks about his new “It” girl: Chelsea Handler.

Alex and Dean are out and proud and sick! Before the pride celebration, Alex and Dean head to the beer bust at The Eagle and have a blast with the Dickies boy (too bad he didn’t know it). They celebrate a weekend of pride in San Francisco. They start the weekend off by getting a room at the Hyatt Regency and of course, eating and shopping in Union Square at Lori’s Diner and Macy’s. The cute gay boys and the tourists were out in full force. The pride weekend continues at the Civic Center, the Pink Party and of course the parade itself. Dean was turned on by the Dykes on Bikes….well more of the bikes than the Dykes.

Zach, Zach, Zach. Dean continues his love of the movie “Shelter” and introduces us to Shane Mack who appears on the Shelter soundtrack. It was a wacky week in the world of news: Wisconsin gays can get arrested if they marry in Calfornia, SF Politicians are boycotting the HRC, and Oregon is trying to take away the rights of domestic partners. In entertainment news another lesbian goes straight, Andy Cooper is outed twice (sort of), and what was that??? Rent in espanol?

Dr. Kimeron Hardin’s book event is coming up on July 10th at Books Inc. off of Castro. Dr. Kim will be talking about his latest book “Loving Ourselves: The Gay and Lesbian Guide to Self-Esteem”.

Alex and I had a great time at the San Francisco Gay Pride Parade and Festival. We have both come down with colds. So I just don’t know if we will record a show this week. You just might have to wait until next Monday. Sorry about that.

One week ago, it reached the high 90’s in the city and today the temps will range from 54 to 69. As I look out the window this morning from home, it is cloudy, or is that just more smoke? There have been over 800 fires burning in the state of California over the past couple of weeks, many burning out of control as we have a lack of resources to put them out. Can anyone say “Armageddon”? Well, lets not go there boys and girls!

It has been so smoky in the Bay Area over the last week that one can only see a few miles away. I have got myself a very nasty cough and no other cold symptoms. It’s just a wait and see situation as to whether it is a cold or troubles due to the smoke. Oh, I digress! The question at hand is what are a couple of gay boys going to wear to the Gay Pride celebrations in the city this weekend?

Actually, I wish trying to decide what to wear was the most important question for the weekend, but somehow I just don’t think that it is. Am I about to get myself in trouble here with my Gay brethren? Probably. I think the question that I need to ask myself this morning is what is the meaning and purpose of the Gay Pride celebration and parade this weekend?

I think a little history is in order first. Here is a direct quote from the San Francisco Pride organization on the history of the parade…

The annual Pride Celebration commemorates the rebellion of LGBT patrons of the Stonewall Inn in New York City’s Greenwich Village in response to a routine police raid on June 27, 1969. The following year, a “Gay-In” that took place on June 27, 1970 that was the early progenitor of the current Pride Celebration. Since 1972, the event has been held every year, though under various names: “Christopher Street West” in 1972, “Gay Freedom Day” from 1973 to 1980, then “International Lesbian & Gay Freedom Day Parade” from 1981 to 1994, and finally, its present appellation, San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Pride Celebration.

Since its modest beginnings, San Francisco Pride has ballooned into one of the largest and most well-known Pride events in the world. Pride events everywhere have come to symbolize several things: the long history of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer resistance to the gender and sex binaries and the hegemony of heterosexist institutions, the freedom of all people to meaningfully and proudly express their sexual and gender identities, and the commitment of LGBT people to combating oppression. From this history of rebellion grew the mission of San Francisco LGBT Pride: to educate the World, celebrate our culture, commemorate our heritage, and liberate our people.

There has been talk lately, well probably every year the parade has been held actually, about whether or not the parade and celebration has lost its way. Is there any political relevance to the event at this time in our history? Is the pride celebration putting forth the message and image that is needed to further the acceptance of the GLBT communities by the mainstream? Has the sexual behavior and lewdness become too much? Is it just a parade of commercialism with big money contributed by the likes of Anheuser-Busch, Wells Fargo, Google, Virgin America, and others? Is it a platform for any nut-bag to walk down Market Street with a cause that has nothing to do with the current issues of the GLBT community?

Step back from your direct involvement in all of this for a moment and think about what is being rightly or wrongly portrayed to the rest of the world by this celebration this weekend. Does some of what goes on here embarrass you just a bit? I’m going to be very honest here as I always am, yes some of it is embarrassing to me. There are going to be times this weekend that I’m going to cringe, close my eyes and say to myself oh that wasn’t really necessary now was it? But, I’m not going to let all that stop me from my Gay holiday in the city this weekend.

Gay marriage, at least for now, is legal in California. Friday was the busiest day so far for Gay marriages at the San Francisco city hall. The attendance at the celebration this weekend will be greater than years past with many in the GLBT community coming together from around the country and world to celebrate our freedom to marry. This is certainly one reason for us to get together and celebrate this weekend.

I also think that the celebration has just turned into one big commercial event. I think this is what the event represents to many of us. It is the American way. I guess I’m not complaining that much, I am going to partake myself. Let me assure all of you though, I will not be striping down to my underwear and dancing like a little girl on any float, nor will I be marching up Market Street carrying a sign depicting the plight of males across the world that are being circumcised each year.

What I will be doing is celebrating our victory on Gay marriage in the state of California and I will simply be a participant in the largest Gay party the world has ever seen. We will spend money on a hotel room, eat at restaurants, shop at Macy’s, turn our heads at every cute guy that walks by, drink many Bud-lights, eat some crappy event food, take pictures of the religious zealots and their signs condemning our sinful homosexual ways, get sun-burned, buy sun screen lotion, party, party and party!

So lets go party! Oh, wait, that’s right, I’ve got to figure out what I’m going to wear this weekend! I can’t find the pair of Ralph Lauren Polo cargo pants that I wanted to wear. Damn it! I think I left them in the motorhome the last time that Daniel and I were at the ranch. Well, its going to be a few hours before I’m ready to go…got to make myself look all pretty…oh I mean homo masculine!

At 5:01pm on Monday, June 16th, the first legal Gay marriage took place in the office of Mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco. Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, a couple of more than fifty years, were the first to get married at a time in our history which is being called the second summer of love. Alex and Dean were there outside the Mayor’s office waiting in support of Del and Phyliss and all Gay couples who will now marry across the state of California.

Alex and Dean had a busy week with dinners, cocktails and a concert. Gay men and straight women’s brains, George Michael, RENT, Mario Lopez and David Beckham’s underwear are all part of today’s current news and entertainment. Listener’s email comments are read on last week’s show on Gay self esteem, depression and other topics.

I can vividly remember the day, March 10, 2004, when Alex and I were married at the city hall in San Francisco. This was our second trip to the city to get married. About four weeks prior, we were turned away due to the overwhelming number of Gay and Lesbian couples that were trying to get married. We were one of the last couples, over 4000 in total, to get married before the California Supreme Court issued a temporary stay on the following day. A temporary stay that lasted over four years.

Our marriage on March 10, 2004 was soon taken away from us and we once again became second class citizens at the hands of the religious fanatics that were then and still are running this country and our daily lives. This was a time of great happiness and sadness for me. Along with Alex and me getting married, in March of 2004 I graduated from University with a four year Bachelor of Science degree. This was quite an accomplishment for me at this stage of my life. I wish I had done that when I was twenty two! Sadness came when the courts put a stop to gay marriage and when on Good Friday, April 9, 2004, my mother lost her brave battle with cancer.

My mother died in a hospital in San Diego hundreds of miles away from her home in Eugene Oregon. The whole family was at her bedside when she passed. I’m glad I was there with her. I can’t image being witness to anything more emotionally tramatic then watching my sweet mother open her eyes at that moment, look up at my father and then exhail that last breath of air from her mortal body. As I look back at that day, it also signified in a way the death of our family. Many of us never spoke again to one another until the death of my father late last year brought us children together again for a brief time.

My mother didn’t watch me graduate from the University, she didn’t attend our marriage at the city hall, I didn’t even tell her that Alex and I went to the city and got married. One thing that I do know however is that my mother was always proud of me. There was never a moment in my life, never a thing that I could do wrong where she wasn’t proud of who and what I was and am. I wish I could have that same level of pride and confidence in myself as my mother had in me. If she was still with us and if Alex and I do get “legally” married, she would certainly be there.

As we celebrate pride this month, I will do so with the knowledge and excitement that Gay marriage is for the first time legal in the state of California. We truly are Bound for Equality! It is also extremely important for us to realize that this wonderful gay marriage right can slip right through our hands once again and forever, come the election this November. The religious right will put up a fight to the likes that we have never witnessed before for a consitutional amendment against Gay marriage. This will be their battle for their silly little way of life. This is our battle too. It is now our time to fight for our way of life. Another time and opportunity will not come again.

Barnes and Noble was our first stop and then Borders. What was interesting at both of these book stores was the shelf space that these two stores dedicated to Gay and Lesbian books or I should say the gross lack of shelf space. Barnes and Noble did have one rack of Gay and Lesbian books, but Borders had less than one shelf (see photo). However, at Borders, there was almost an entire row dedicated to all kinds of books on straight sexuality, books that no one would want their children to have access to. I guess that is acceptable to the religious fanatics and those wig wearing, wooden teeth baring old men that seem to be running this country today and telling us all how we should live, what we are to believe in and what we can read!

Well, wait a minute. That’s right, I do know why we have such little shelf space dedicated to even Gay and Lesbian self help books; there just simply are no Gays in San Mateo! That must be the answer. I do want to be at least a little fair to both Barnes and Noble and Borders, they do have the books we are looking for available on line. I was just hoping to be able to contribute to my own local community by spending my money locally. Castro Street, here I come!

Alex and Dean wrap up their Hawaiian vacation. They spent three hours, eighty feet in the air, zip lining from tree to tree. They got mud in their faces and celebrated Dean’s birthday with a horse drawn carriage ride and a dinner not to forget.

It’s another road trip to Oregon and this time they drive the motor home south to it’s new home. Is Dean getting a little too hung up on the motor home? Should we call this being homo-masculine or being straight?

Alex and Dean talk about the presidential elections and the gay defense for a 15 year old murderer. The boring Oscar’s came and went, American Idol is back. Oh yes, David Archuleta is so cute! I guess Dean is going to watch this year after all. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck videos…that’s all that needs to be said.

 Waikiki has really gone through a make over, at least at the north end of the strip where our hotel is located. We were worried that it would really be different. Well, this end of the strip is different, but for the better. It is nice to see this area get a face lift. Only issue I have is that there are too many Prada type stores! Damn those rich old ladies! Alex and I did buy a couple shirts at Quiksilver. Well, their no Prada, but damn their boy clothes are expensive. I asked the cashier if they ever get old men like me in the store buying themselves young guys clothing. She assured me that they do. Oh, good I feel better about buying myself a shirt that guys 30 years younger then me wear!

Wow, I think we are being attacked! Is it Pearl Harbor all over again? {long pause} We were in our room and we heard real loud explosions out over the bay. It was fireworks for the Chinese New Year celebration, so we just went down to the beach to watch.

The hotel that we are staying in is also begin refurbished. This is the fourth time that we have stayed at this hotel. They are doing a great job! The room is really nice. It will be a beautiful hotel when they are all done. They did away with the pastel blue colors and went with an upscale earth tone palette. Sweet!

We have made a few trips up and down the Waikiki strip. No hookers have yet to ask me if I want company. We stopped at Hula’s yesterday afternoon and had a beer. Tonight we are going to Angles to gawk at the “younger” crowd. Damn, there have been a fair share of cuties on the island so far. It was good to see such a mix of young and old at Hula’s yesterday.

We had beers at the Yard House today. They must have over 200 types of beer on tap. Needless to say, “cute waiters”! We also got some beach time in today. Alex is now happy! He looks good with his shirt off. All that working out is paying off!

Well, it is almost time to head to Angles. Alex is anxious to see if he can hook one ten years younger than himself. He says that I get to sleep with someone more than ten years younger so why not him? Hmmm, good question. Maybe I can find a hottie for myself that is ten years younger than Alex as well!

The plan for Kauai was lots of rest and relaxation. Well, there is more to do here than one might think. We kept busy the entire time. The Marriott Hotel and Resort was just awesome! Cocks everywhere; just what every gay man is hoping for. We drove to Waimea Canyon one day and to Hanalei the next. We watched the sun dip into the ocean from the beach at Poipu. Zip lining, ATVs and a nice birthday dinner are also in our future.

Yesterday we headed out west towards Waimea. We drove to the end of the road in Waimea Canyon State Park. Alex insists it is called the Kokee State Park, whatever! We stopped at many lookouts and viewed Kauai’s mini Grand Canyon! Sun, rain, wind, cold, we had it all. It was fun and beautiful. A must see for all.

After coming down from the mountain, we had an ice cream cone; yummy. On the drive back, we stopped at Poipu and watched the sun set into the ocean.

Today we are headed over to the north end of the island. Tomorrow morning we are do a zip line tour over the tree tops. Alex is trying to kill me! Wish us luck.

I don’t know what it is about renting cars, but that process takes as much time as it does just to fly to Hawaii. It is “winter” in Hawaii (yeah, right!). There is just a little more rain than we hoped for, the wind is blowing and just a tad bit on the cool side, but hey it’s Hawaii so who cares!

I’m going to use the word “fabulous” even though it is not in my homo-masculine vocabulary. Let me just say, the hotel is just fabulous!

Well, we have to plan our itinerary for tomorrow. Talk to you all soon.

Alex is in mourning over the announcement that RENT is ending its Broadway run on June 1, 2008. He still can’t convince Dean to take a trip to New York to see it one last time on Broadway. Public sex is being defended and attacked at the same time. The ACLU says Senator Larry Craig deserves privacy during public sex in the restroom while the police in Sacramento are cracking down on cruising. Alex talks about lots of entertainment news while Dean pretends he’s on the beach in Hawaii. American Idol, Kyle XY, Terminator, and the Golden Globes are just a few of the items discussed. Filming for the Harvey Milk movie will begin in the Castro shortly. Have you seen Sean Penn hanging out in the Castro yet? Did you hear Tom Ammiano is going to play himself? Alex and Dean call this gay-lusional.

Alex and I made the 10 hour drive to Eugene, Oregon this week to work on my father’s house. We spent today, Thanksgiving, painting and replacing lighting fixtures. We had our Thanksgiving dinner (turkey take-out from Marie Callenders) at the family dinner table where I have had many family dinners in the past; this will be the last. I feel that my father is going to walk into the house at any moment.

 It’s 33 degrees outside so we are staying inside and bundled up. Tomorrow night we plan on venturing out the the only “gay” friendly bar in town.

Two weeks ago, Dean’s father passed away. Death is inevitable, but it is an event that presents us with great despair and hardship. They include Barack Obama, John Edwards, Dennis Kucinich, Mike Gravel, Bill Richardson, and Hillary Clinton. We provide our feedback on what they have to say and we grade each one. Who got an "A" and who got a "D"?

We also talk about Halloween being cancelled in the Castro - thatâs just like cancelling Christmas. Alex is excited about the play RENT once again and wants to go to New York to see it. Dean says "at $350 a night for a hotel in NYC, you have to be f****** kidding!". Dean does the unthinkable and admits he wanted to go to the Apple store and look at a Mac Mini and he does.

The Presidential Forum on Gay Issues or the Gay Debates presented by HRC and Logo are on live tonight at 6pm Pacific time. I’m sure you gays on the "other" coast can figure out what time that means for you, right!

Alex and I will be watching on our 50" plasma from the comfort of our living room. You see, Ashok Sinha, the manager  of communications and public affairs for Logo had promised to get back to us on the possibility of Alex and Dean - Gay Men Talking covering the event on behalf of the "regular gay guy" out there in America, I guess we were not important enough. Hell, I think I want to watch this from home anyway.

There are those that are saying this event will be of historic significance for the gay community. That is of course yet to be seen. I personally feel that this event will not do much to further the needs of the average gay man or women living in America today that works, pays a mortgage, pays taxes, is concerned about health care, concerned about job security and just wants the same rights that all other Americans except us have. I don’t see any real change coming from any politician no matter what side of the great divide they stand on.

Logo has a website dedicated to the debates called "The Visible Vote 08". I was reading the latest post and they talk about the "celebrity event" that is going to occur tonight. Well, that’s exciting isn’t it! Here the future of gays and lesbians, that just want to be treated like any other so called normal person, is going to be discussed by the potential next leader of the America and the most powerful leader of the world and Logo and the gay elite seem to be more interested in the celebrity aspect of this circus event that is about to take place. Oh, yes it will be exciting for all us queers to see the red carpet rolled out and see T.R., Neil, Mellisa, Lance and whomever walk down that gauntlet as the camera flashes go off. That will do a lot to ensure that I as a tax paying American citizen am afforded the same rights as the husband and wife and their two kids that live right next door to Alex and me.

Well, I’m waiting in anticipation for the event this evening and I’m holding out hope that the gay community can come away with something positive. Alex and I will be watching. We are very interested in what our listeners have to say after watching the event as well. Please send us your thoughts. We would love to discuss them on our next show.

Kicked out, Gay teenager finds role

It’s time to just sit down and have a beer. Today was fire alarm system testing day for our building in the condo complex. This is something that we have to put up with each year. We had to be home today between 9am and 2pm for the alarm testing.

I also needed to get the oil changed in my car, so I got up about 8am and drove down to the shop that I have used for years. I haven’t had my oil changed for about a year; bad, bad, bad! The shop took my car in right away, so I called Alex and told him he didn’t need to come pick me up. The oil looked like sludge as it drained from the oil pan. Well, maybe I’m just trying to force myself, in a very distructive way, to buy a new car.

The fire alarms started going on and off around 11am and the guy came to our door about 11:30am. Good, all checked out and done and over with for another year. And no, the alarm guys were not cute. We spent some time this morning, while waiting for the alarm testing, cleaning the house. More needs to be done.

Alex and I then headed over to our favorite Mexican market and got our usual Saturday lunch burritos. Only one cute Latino boy today. I pointed out to Alex just how nice his bubble butt looked. Then, I quickly changed the subject to the three lesbians that were sitting behind us. Interesting to see lesbians here.

Costco was our next stop. Good thing we had Alex’s car. That way we couldn’t buy too much. Well, didn’t work. The total was over…well it was a lot. We packed all of the goodies in the trunk; packed in accordence with Alex’s special packing in the trunk rules. He says it all makes sense to him so why doesn’t it make sense to me?

Back at home, I poured myself a beer. I’m not going to tell you the brand of the Mexican beer that begins with a "C" because then I would have to put a registered trademark symbol next to the word and I’ll be damned if I’m going to do that for any company including Corona.

Alex is asleep on the coach. If I can wake him up in time, we will record this week’s podcast tonight and you can hear all about our day again!

We saw Dennis Miller live at a local venue on Friday night. Dennis Miller and his combination of comedy and politics played to a Republican conservative suburban audience. Armstrong and Getty openned and Miller had Willie Brown, former Mayor of San Francisco, as his guest. The disrepectful Republican audience heckled Brown and freaked out Miller. What an interesting night!

The Advocate magazine offends the Gay community by asking "Where’s our Sharpton?" in a recent article. Could we stoop any lower? We need powerful spokes persons for the Gay community, but not Al Sharpton. Dean goes to a helicopter air show on Saturday morning to get his homo-masculine fix for the week. We also talk about Erin Davies and her F*gBug FagBug campaigning against Gay hate speach. Reading her story is a must and please help support her efforts.

This was a fun filled weekend as we celebrated Gay Pride. Friday night we had a drink at the new Hunters Night Club in San Jose and on Saturday night we went to Club Papi in Sunnyvale. Today we spent the day in San Jose at the San Jose Gay Pride Parade and Festival. Chris Snyder and her local Bay Area band Finding Stella performed to the delight of the crowd. Earlier in the week Dean attended the Gay flag raising at the Santa Clara County Government Center where the openly gay county supervisor Ken Yeager gave a short speech.

The AIDS/Lifecycle 6 bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles was held this past week and we talk about the great work that these folks did. A little Paris Hilton and homophobia turned racism along with other news, entertainment and some listener emails are thrown in.

Hi, this is Alex and Dean - Gay Men Talking, coming to you from San Francisco!

This week we talk about Gay Day at Great America. We spent the night with 8,000 other gays and lesbians. We listened to American Idol stars Kimberley Locke, Frenchie Davis and Paris Bennett. Between roller coaster rides and a few beers we also heard Rozalla and Taylor Dayne sing. And while Alex was not looking, Dean flirted with a few Latin boys.

We read an enlightening listener email that talks about his many years in a Brokeback marriage. It is Memorial Day weekend and we’re excited cause we can finally wear white pants and of course because the pool is now open for the summer. Yeah, I know we are so shallow!
